The St. John's Prep volleyball team may not be the favorite to repeat as champions in the North state tournament this spring. But in their playoff opener last night, the Eagles came out against Acton-Boxboro and performed like a top-seeded team.
Sophomore setter Sean Brennan dished out 27 assists as St. John's Prep took out A-B in three straight games, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, in a first round matchup last night in Danvers. That sets up a quarterfinal bout with Andover (11-9) Tuesday back at the Prep (7 p.m.).
"We were very aggressive, which was good for a first round match," explained Eagles head coach Andrew Viselli. "I liked the way we came out and played.
"(Tuesday) should be a good match. They have a lot of talent, so we have some work to do."
Senior outside hitter Sean Mackinson (9 kills) and senior middle hitter Robbie Clough contributed offensively for the Eagles (13-4).
BASEBALL
Peabody 9, Teksbury 6: The Tanners scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, beginning the contest with eight straight hits. Wes Sanders, Bobby Losanno, Ramses Vittini and Casey Grenier all had two hits for the Tanners while Steve Girolamo knocked in three RBI. On the mound, George Tsonis picked up the win for Peabody (11-5) and Nick Allen tossed two strong innings to earn the save.
Chelsea 11, NST/EA 10: Five first inning errors doomed North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie (7-7), which battled hard after falling down 8-0 in the opening frame. Sophomore Tim Anderson pitched five strong innings while giving up just two earned runs. Senior leadoff hitter Tyler Cook was 3 for 3 with a pair of walks and four runs scored, and Sean Hebert gobbled up six ground balls at shortstop while collecting two hits. Jordan Castillo also added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
