I've had some bad dates, says Byrne
Rose Byrne looks every inch the Park Avenue princess. Perched elegantly on the edge of an armchair, she seamlessly blends with the upscale decor around her. Her delicate features are immaculately made up, and although its a Sunday afternoon, there's nothing dressed down about the Aussie actor.
Wearing a print silk shirt and wide-legged trousers by Monique Lhuillier, her impossibly high Louboutins make her look like a baby giraffe when she stands up to shake my hand. All in all, its enough to make you worry that maybe her adoptive hometown of New York City has changed the 31-year-old Sydney-bred girl.
It has been nearly two years since she last graced our pages and, in that time, a lot has changed.
, she described herself as having ruthless ambition."I don't know about ruthless," she says.
"I'm ambitious, but I'm not particularly competitive. I'm a people-pleaser to the point where it can be exhausting. I need to relax and not worry about what others think. But I have to be ambitious; Hollywood is dog-eat-dog there's always someone behind you."
With her Aussie vowels still intact, there's something refreshingly real about Byrne and, despite appearances, it doesn't take long before the chilly New York exterior melts away.

But then, she has never been afraid to speak her mind, whether it's revealing the roles she missed out on or the fact she hated her years living in LA from the age of 22. Yet even though she blends in and has mastered an American accent, Byrne maintains an outsider's perspective.
"There's always an element of feeling you're not at home," she nods. "If I were an American actor, I'd be asking, Why are all these Aussies coming and taking our jobs?"
After more than a decade on the sidelines, Byrne has well and truly cracked Hollywood. During the next couple of months, shell star in three major movies: the thriller Insidious , for which her intense performance as the junior lawyer with nerves of steel has notched up nominations at the Golden Globes, Emmys and AFI Awards.
Of course, success rarely comes without sacrifice. Byrne admits to letting her personal life slide in favour of work at times, passing up family events back home and cutting holidays short to return for auditions. The same period that saw her career jump a notch also saw the end of her seven-year relationship with Australian actor/writer Brendan Cowell. The couple announced their split last year and Byrne says she's still happily single.
