Into THE Wild
Kids camping for the first time, there's nothing like a relaxing trip to a state park--the ideal campsite, the hike to a dramatic overlook, the stories told around a crackling fire, the trip into town for barbecue and shopping. From the Piney Woods to the Caprock Canyons to the Davis Mountains, our parks are filled with iconic places that remind us of Texas's rugged beauty. So we've created ten trips that will tell you where to camp, what to do, and how to make the most of your getaway--and you should. Considering the rash of wildfires that devastated Possum Kingdom State Park and large parts of West Texas, as well as looming budget cuts by the Legislature, the parks need you more than ever. For specific information about any of these adventures--including fees, maps, and up-to-the-minute alerts about burn bans--visit tpwd.state.tx.us. Then load up your backpack, grab your rod and reel, and say hello to the great outdoors.and in an hour and a half you can be in your bathing suit, sunning yourself on the diving raft at Lake Raven. Huntsville State Park features some of the most beautiful and pristine pine forest in East Texas, making it an ideal escape from the roar of the city. ¶ The sandy beach draws a crowd, but swimming is just one of many ways to wind down at this park. The trefoil lake is stocked with a mix of bass, crappie, catfish, and perch. If you don't have your own craft, you can rent a canoe or a paddleboat, but take note: Alligators as long as twelve feet have been seen gliding through the brown water. ¶ The wooded shore and the lapping waves are a calm backdrop for the camping areas, of which my favorite is Coloneh, on Little Chinquapin Creek, far enough from the day-use areas for a modicum of peace and quiet. There are practical reasons why a pine forest makes for the best camping--soft sandy soil, less undergrowth--but it also has something to do with less mundane matters such as shafts of light and soothing breezes. Under the towering canopy there's a chance to slow down and appreciate the delights of nature. There are plenty of these along the park's Chinquapin Trail, a 6.8-mile circle around the lake. Take the time to wander along the western part, which drops down from high pine forest into hardwood bottomland and over the marshes at the lake's north end, and as you walk, notice how each environment has its own range of wild inhabitants. ¶ The park's Lone Star Trail connects with the better-known Lone Star Hiking Trail, which runs for 130 miles through the Sam Houston National Forest from Cleveland to Richards. You can camp anywhere along the route, but the trail is designed to be wild and deliberately lacks any kind of facility. Paved and off-road paths make this an inviting destination for bicyclists, and equestrians can experience the tall pines from the saddle on an hour-long trek organized by 2E Stables. That's a far cry from sitting in traffic on 610.

Beach Camping Trip to North Padre Island - Memorial Day Weekend ...
This will be a kid-friendly camping trip on the beach at Padre Island National Seashore . It's about a 3 hour drive one-way from San Antonio.
Extending 113 miles along the Texas Gulf coast, Padre Island is comprised of stunning dunes of fine white sand, thriving grasslands, saltwater marshes, and myriad wildlife. With 70 miles of natural beaches, 133,918 acres of which are protected in the National Seashore, Padre Island is one of the largest undeveloped barrier islands in the United States.
We'll be camping somewhere on South Beach in the five miles south of the Malaquite Visitor Center on the beach, before the 4-wheel-drive only marker. We are usually at about mile 3. The beach here is generally fine for driving on in a 2WD vehicle.
Like in past years, the camping area for those of you with children will be to the north of the community area, the adults-only camping area will be to the south of the community area. North is to the right if you are facing the dunes from the water, south is to the left.
We'll have a community BBQ grill for you to cook on, and a full kitchen setup with stoves, pots & pans, utensils, etc. You will need to bring your own camping gear and food. For those who want to participate we will do a potluck dinner on Saturday night of sorts at about 7:30pm. There are no facilities on this stretch of beach, this will be primitive camping. There are full shower and restroom facilities at the Malaquite Visitor Center which will be a few miles away if you need them. However, we will have an outhouse and a shower set up at the campsite.
Extra bug spray is always a good idea. Sometimes there are no mosquitos at all, especially during dry spells. However, if there have been recent rains they can get thick at times. Bring plenty of ice, especially if it''s going to be hot. If you have space to bring one extra cooler with nothing but ice, you probably won''t regret it. Extra towels are usually handy.
