School board presidents react, reflect on failed re-election bids

After a primary election filled with hot-button issues and school districts with as many as five open spots, two school board presidents failed to win over voters Tuesday for a chance in November's General Election.

Blue Mountain

President Carl W. Yeich served on Blue Mountain's school board for eight years. He said that although he lost his re-election bid, he respects anyone from the community looking to take the position.

"I don't want it interpreted as sour grapes. I'm not bitter and I wish them all well," Yeich said. "The only thing that I ask is that the new board members leave their personal agendas at home."

Yeich said it's always difficult being the incumbent going into an election because new candidates can promise anything, and he thinks many of the issues were misinterpreted.

"There was an exceptionally low turnout and I think voters should have done more homework, but that's life and politics on the low level," Yeich said.

He said some residents complained about the school board members spending too much money on the facilities, but Yeich said that maintaining the buildings is important to providing a quality education.

"I think the Blue Mountain School District accomplished a terrific record and we have been accused of being frivolous with our expenses, but four years were without a tax increase," he said.

Looking to the future, Yeich said that maintaining a workable budget will be a challenge since the economy doesn't seem to be turning around quickly.

With the election aside, Yeich said he wants to tell newcomers that school board members often cannot do everything they would like to do because of state mandates and regulations.

Mahanoy Area

After four years on the school board at Mahanoy Area, President Tony Miller said that he respects residents for letting their voices be heard, as well as the candidates stepping up to the challenge of being a school board member.

"The people let it be known that we made decisions they weren't very happy with and we made difficult decisions that we thought were right for students, administration and the taxpayers," Miller said. "It starts at the top when you need change and I would probably be the focal point."

Two of the issues that Miller said have been unpopular with the public were the strict dress code that will take effect next school year and the rehiring of John "Jack" Hurst as Mahanoy Area's business administrator at a salary of $99,800, after Hurst left the school district in December 2009 to become Blue Mountain's business manager.
