It was the capital during Sri Lanka's Golden Age, a time of great prosperity and construction, and now it contains some of the most beautiful reminders of that era. The city's high point came in the reign of his grandson, Parakramabahu I, whose great building projects still dot the landscape. Many structures in the area date to this time, including the Royal Palace and a variety of temples and statuary. Another site at Polonnaruwa is Nissanka Latha Mandapaya. Built in the 12th century A.D. as a place for chanting Buddhist scriptures, this structure has stone columns that are curved to resemble lotus stalks undulating in the breeze. While the roof has long since collapsed, the columns are still standing. The natural rock was often used for the carving of reliefs, such as the statue of King Parakramabahu.

Arapahoe Basin

From the summit at 13,050 feet, Arapahoe Basin is a stirring sight, and at the age of 64, the ski resort there is one of the oldest in Colorado. Blanketed beneath more than 350 inches of snow per year, A-Basin operates late into spring and early summer.

The recently-opened Montezuma Bowl provides skiiers with 36 new runs over 400 acres. Two Terrain Parks challenge freestylers with an assortment of half-pipes and jumps.
